An abundance of deer, turkey, bear and small game population make Warren County a destination that beckons hunters to return year after year. The average deer harvest in the northwestern edge of the Allegheny Highlands averaged about 10,000 buck and 17,000 doe in the 1990's. State game lands and the Allegheny National Forest make the hunting region very popular. Many hunters come to harvest the various fowl, which are native to the area. Mallards, Wood Duck, Black Duck, Golden Eyes, Buffleheads and many others are found throughout the swamps and waterways of the Allegheny National Forest. The beginning of the fishing year is the first day of trout season, in mid April. Within Warren County flows hundreds of miles of trout water, many stocked with wild populations of native brook trout, wild brown trout and rainbow trout. Stocking lists are available at local tackle shops, along with maps directing you to some of the remote waters. For trophy brown trout, try the Allegheny River and the Allegheny Reservoir. In May, the season begins for walleye, pike and muskellunge. Some of the best fishing in the state is in the Allegheny Region. The Allegheny Reservoir is one of the best trophy muskie waters anywhere. They are also relatively abundant in the Allegheny River. The same is true for walleye, holding NWPA's State Record of 17 lbs. 9oz. and the record for the Northern Pike of 35 lbs. By this time, few anglers remain along the trout streams, but there are still plenty of trout. The best aquatic insect hatches occur during May and June. Some of the best small mouth bass fishing occurs as bass season opens in June. You can find good fishing in the Allegheny River, both down river from the Kinzua Dam and in the lower stretches of the Brokenstraw, Conewango and in the Allegheny Reservoir. Don't miss the Pennsylvania State Championship Fishing Tournament during the last full weekend in September. Open to any licensed Pennsylvania angler, it annually draws thousands.
