4th: Plant Prints - 2:00pm to 3:00pm - Chapman State Park - Meet the naturalist at pavilion 4. Be creative, get messy and make some nature print bandanas. We'll get out the paint, identify some leaves and find out what plants grow at Chapman. This program is for ages 4 and up - adults are welcome too. For more information contact 814-723-0250
4th: Firefly Fireworks-Paddle Trip & Campfire - 7:00pm to 10:00pm - Chapman State Park - Meet the naturalist at the boat rental building beside the beach. Celebrate the 4th of July with an evening paddle on Chapman Lake followed by a quiet variety of fireworks - a campfire among the fireflies. We will explore the wetlands surrounding the West Branch of Tionesta Creek and enjoy the peace and quiet of a sunset over the water. Afterward, share stories, songs and roasted marshmallows around a campfire on the beach. Bring a guitar, kazoo or other instrument if you'd like to accompany us. Canoes are available on loan from the park or you can bring your own canoe or kayak. Please pre-register by calling the park office at 814-723-0250 by July 3rd, as there is limited space for this program. If you bring a boat, park in parking lot 4. The canoeing portion of this program is for ages 8 and up; the campfire is open to everyone. No rental boats will be available. The boat rental concession is closed for the 2008 summer season. 5th: Sharpening Your Senses - 11:00am to 12:00pm - Chapman State Park - Meet the naturalist at pavilion 4. Discover how mammals find their way around the woodlands by using your nose to sniff out a trail. Then learn some tips to move quietly through the forest and test your stalking skills by playing Native American games. 5th: Making Tracks - 2:00pm to 3:00pm - Chapman State Park - Meet the naturalist at pavilion 4. The tracks animals leave behind have a tale to tell. Become a nature detective and learn how to figure out what an animal was doing, what they have eaten or even what ate them. Create an animal track and make your own track tales. This program is for children ages 4 - 12; children under 4 may attend with an adult.
5th: Canoe and Kayak Basics - 1:00pm - Cook Forest State Park - Please meet at the Park Office to learn how to read the river, operate your craft safely, and know how to be properly prepared for a trip down the river. (2hrs) For more information contact 814-744-8407

Red, White & Blue Salute to honor local veterans including a service and patriotic sing along and pictorial wall for the month of July. Learn about local logging history, observe Indian sign and take a breathtaking view from the box at the very top of the Fire Tower which will be open until 2:30pm. Explore Cook Forest at night for Pennsylvania owls as we car-pool to owl hotspots in the park. Barred, great horned, screech and saw-whet owls have been known to make an appearance. 12th: Hellbender Hunt - 12:30pm - Cook Forest State Park - Please meet at the Park Office to search the river for the elusive Allegheny Alligator and its close relative the mudpuppy. Be prepared to get thoroughly drenched. Bring a sturdy river-walking stick, proper river footwear is a must. We will car-pool upriver to potential sites. Hellbenders have been confirmed below the Piney Dam, but none have been scientifically verified this far upstream. Finding one would be a momentous occasion, giving more credence to the increased health and water quality of the National Wild & Scenic Clarion River. July 31st - August 1: Penn's Adventurers - 10am to 2:20pm - Chapman State Park - Youths ages 9 to 12 will explore the lake habitat at Chapman State Park. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will provide lessons in canoe safety and basic paddling on the first day. We will practice our paddling skills the next day, learn about watersheds and discover what aquatic animals, birds and mammals make their homes in and near the water. Please register your child/children by July 28, 2008. Call 814-723-0250 to obtain more information and a registration form. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited; however, the canoe safety and basic paddling portion of this program may be canceled if fewer than 10 children register.
